Tooele County Realtors show they care!
Tooele County Realtors show they care for their community on a regular basis. We live here and we work here, but not everyone knows that it isn't all commissions with us. Even though we certainly don't all drive a Lexus, we still fall into the same negative stereotypes that Realtors everywhere seem to fall into. Here's what we've been doing over the last couple of years to try to counter it!
For the last several years, Tooele County has been seen an increasing population of folks that need a hand, just like many areas of our country. It may be temporary housing assistance, transportation, clothing or food. All of that aid falls under the umbrella of Tooele County Relief Services. This is a service provided by the County that also requires private donations in order to survive, as the County has its own budget issues to deal with. We've often used our monthly Board General membership meetings to do food drives, or fill sack lunches. We've often used this time of year as a chance to raise money to buy coats for people that don't have them. If you're familiar with Tooele County in the winter, you know how chilly it can get!
But this year, some Realtors chose to take it up a notch. Realtor Laramie Dunn, with the help of 2012 Board President Laney Riegel and some volunteers organized the first annual 'Taste of Art' gathering. Artists from all over donated various works of art, with the proceeds of the silent auction going to Tooele County Relief Services. The event was a great success, with the Tooele County Association of Realtors raising over $3400 for Relief Services. Great job, by Laramie, Laney and crew. Thanks for all the weeks of planning that went into making the 'Taste of Art' such a success!
In addition, this past week saw a more impromtu demonstration of Realtor generosity. We had our annual Board Christmas Party. We had a great lunch, with some 1oo Realtors in attendance. The highlight of the day was the chance to listen to Chad Hymas. To call Chad a mere 'motivational speaker' wouldn't begin to cover what Chad is. However, I'll let you learn about Chad and his story on your own. The point is, before Chad spoke, Laney mentioned that the Tooele County Childrens Justice Center was in need of funds for coats for children that are victims of abuse. The CJC is an amazing facility that takes care of those kids in lots of ways, from helping law enforcement conduct the sensitive interviews needed for prosecution, to getting them counseling and treatment. The facility is actually in a beautiful older home designed to make the children feel as comfortable in a tough situation.
In any event, when Chad heard Laney talking about the needs at the CJC, he immediately switched his own plans in mid-stream. He had brought autographed copies of his book 'Doing what must be done' to give to the Realtors in attendance. He decided instead to give the book away in exchange for any donation to the CJC. He then went ahead with his presentation, which was phenominal! At the end of the day, we made a donation for $951 dollars which allowed us to buy 40 brand new coats for the local victims of child abuse in Tooele County. As a bonus, we got a great, inspirational book to read! Thanks Chad!
Local Realtors are making a difference in our community on a daily basis. We just don't talk about it alot. So, the next time you hear that Realtors only care about money, remind them that Tooele County Realtors love to show they care!
