Why Shop Locally In Tooele County
Buckle up, here comes another 'why shop locally in Tooele County' post.
But this time it won't be about using a local real estate agent to buy or sell your home. (but you can make you're own connection if you want).
Most of the people that know me know that I'm a fierce advocate for the city/county I call home.
While not a 'real' native (as my homegrown wife reminds me often!), I've lived in Tooele County longer than any other place in my life. I've also come to embrace many of the 'shortcomings' that living in a semi-rural town can bring. Shopping is one of those.
I've Long Advocated For 'Shopping Local'.
The advantages are obvious. Helping support our local businesses helps those local business people. In addition, keeping sales tax revenue here helps to keep some of our other local tax dollars where they belong. I don't buy my gas anywhere other than Tooele County, unless on vacation. In that case I fill up here when I leave, and I work backwards when returning, specifically not filling up again that last time until I can do it at home. I also recognize that sometimes it may not be possible to keep all my purchases local. To that end, several years ago I came up with a formula when deciding if I should shop away from home.
In my opinion, there are three components that people should look at when making a purchase. In no particular order, #1 is price, #2 is selection #3 is service. If a local merchant can satisfy 2 of those 3 items, I keep my money here. Sometimes it's simply not possible. No one local can get me an 82' 4K TV for a price to beat Costco. However, the last 4 cars we've purchased came from Tooele. Not easy when you consider what a car snob I am...
However, I want to caution us all that we can be trapped by that first one:
What About Price When Shopping Local.
Perhaps that's your most important one, and the others don't matter to you. However, I'd like you to rethink that. I just caught myself forgetting to have an open mind, and forgetting numbers 2 & 3. Let me explain.
Obviously, we've had a ton of snow lately. As the legislative session is going on and we've had lots of homes to show as well, we are on the road a bunch right now. That means that I've noticed that the wiper blades in our 2 work vehicles are worn out. Today, I finally had time to take care of them. Like so many of my Tooele friends and neighbors, I ran straight down the road to that big box store that shall not be named. I quickly got pretty frustrated while looking at the empty pegs. For 'Audrey' I couldn't find 2 blades from the same brand that would fit. For 'Otto' I could only get 1 blade, and it was a cheapo (car snob, remember?). When I asked an employee if there were any others in the back, he shrugged and said he didn't know. Cranky, I bought the mismatched ones for the one car, telling myself that I'd grab a set from the SAME big box store next time I was in SLC, probably tomorrow. It never occurred to me that I might have options. I had allowed myself to forget my 3 rules, concentrating on only #1!.
Shop Where You Get Home Town Service
As I headed home on Main St, I passed an auto parts store, and I thought I'd stop. I guessed they'd be more expensive, if they even had what I needed. But, I really needed some. As I walked into the store, I was greeted by no less than 3 employees, all with a smile and an offer to help me find what I needed. On the wiper aisle, I had no less than FIVE choices of blades that would fit Otto perfectly, including the same OEM blades that came on the car! While deciding, I was approached again and asked if I needed any help. I went to the counter and paid for my purchase, admittedly half again what I'd paid for the mismatched set. But, it was a better product, and the experience ended with an offer from the employee willing to help install them and wishing me a great afternoon. Rule's #2-3 were perfectly executed!
Tooele County Has Plenty Of Places To Shop
Do you know how many options I could have availed myself of without sending my tax dollars to another city/county? At least 5 other parts stores just in Tooele City. While not the mom & pop I usually like to support, O'Reilly Auto Parts did a great job of reminding me that price is NOT the only thing to consider when I'm trying to decide between paying to fix a pot hole in Tooele or in West Valley. In fact, I went back to the BIG store and returned the mismatched set I bought for 'Audrey' and went back to O'Relly.
Now, if we could just get that Olive Garden and Costco. Of course we may need some increased housing density for that.
Whoops, there I go talking about real estate again when I promised myself I would only ask you to consider why to shop locally in Tooele County.
But, If you happen to have a real estate related question, or a comment, buzz me up; Chris Sloan 435-840-5031. I'm waaaaay local.
